In 1982, Dr. Marian Croak began her engineering career at Bell Labs.
At the time, the internet and the telephone lived in two completely separate worlds. The internet moved files and data. Phone calls traveled only through traditional telephone lines.
Most engineers at the time were convinced that clear, reliable voice communication could never travel over the internet. To them, mixing the two systems simply wasn’t realistic.
Dr. Marian Croak disagreed.
The Idea Everyone Called Impossible
Croak held a different view from almost everyone around her. If the internet could carry data, she reasoned, there was no real reason it couldn’t carry voice too.
When she later moved to AT&T, she set out to turn that belief into reality. However, the idea faced heavy resistance. Many colleagues dismissed it as unworkable.
Croak didn’t back down. Working with thousands of engineers, she helped lead AT&T’s traditional telephone network through a historic shift toward Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP).
That single shift is the reason Zoom, FaceTime, WhatsApp, Skype, and countless other internet calling services exist today. Because of her work, billions of people can now reach loved ones anywhere on Earth in seconds.

Her name appears on more than 200 patents, the majority of them tied directly to communications technology. Her inventions helped reshape how digital communication works at its core.
When Innovation Saved Lives
Croak’s impact reaches far beyond phone calls. She co-invented the Text-to-Donate system, a technology that lets people give money to charity with nothing more than a text message.
The system saw its first major real-world use in 2005, following Hurricane Katrina. As a result, disaster relief organizations gained a fast, simple way to collect donations from ordinary people.
Its biggest moment came in 2010. After a devastating earthquake struck Haiti, the same technology helped raise roughly $43 million in donations — funds that went on to support millions of people affected by the disaster.
From AT&T to Google: Connecting the Next Billion
In 2014, Dr. Marian Croak joined Google. There, she turned her attention to a new challenge: internet access for people who had never had it.
She led projects that expanded internet and Wi-Fi access across countries including India, Ghana, and Uganda, bringing modern connectivity to communities long left offline.
Today, Croak serves as Vice President of Engineering at Google, where she leads research into Responsible AI and human-centered technology — work aimed at making sure powerful new tools genuinely serve people.
A Historic Honor
In 2022, Dr. Marian Croak’s decades of work earned her induction into the National Inventors Hall of Fame. In doing so, she became one of the first Black women ever inducted into the organization.
